Last week, I was asked by a student, what was my “Why”?
I have previously put off really thinking about what my answer to this would be, as a result, it took quite some considerable thinking and time to finally put it into words.
Your “Why” is a statement of purpose that describes why you do the work you do and why you live the lifestyle you do. It is your calling. It is your conviction.
I was going to write a lengthy piece but the why for me is actually very simple. Helping people.
I have always strived to help people and to have a positive impact on the lives of others. Sharing my work to touch people's emotions and enhance their lives is why I do what I do. Helping other people sounds cheesy, but I also take immense feelings of joy and purpose when I am able to help others.
Helping others energises me.
Whether with beautiful images of nature that both brightens their day and connects them with nature, or through my portraiture work which helps people feel good about themselves, by allowing them to see themselves the way those who love them see them.
As a mother, a wife and a creative, the powerful feeling of self-worth and value when someone invests in my work, both validates and inspires me. I simply want to be proud of myself and for others to be proud of me.
I am at my happiest when taking photos, particularly when challenging myself to photograph everyday flora in my signature style, creating in the camera what my interpretation of the subject before me is. The camera is the key to my ‘why’, every time I pick it up I lose myself in the shot, I get an intense feeling of pride with my ability to create an image of what I see, how I see it and to be able to share it with others, whether digitally on social media or printed as a beautiful framed artwork. Pretty flowers in the summer, the rich colours of Autumn, to the cooler hues and defined shapes of winter foliage.
Have you tried to find your "Why"? If so, how did it go?
